Jane Roland Martin
The celebrated philosopher of education Jane Roland Martin is known for her work exploring matters of sex and gender and education, as well as the interrelationship of culture and education. Professor of Philosophy Emerita at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, her books include Reclaiming a Conversation: The Ideal of the Educated Woman (Yale University Press, 1985), Cultural Miseducation: In Search of a Democratic Solution (Teachers College Press, 2002), and Education Reconfigured (Routledge, 2011). The education philosopher Leonard Waks wrote this of Dr. Martin: “She has been a dominant figure in philosophy of education for almost half a century. Her work, marked by a rare combination of analytical precision, philosophical imagination, social responsibility and natural charm, has deservedly reached a wide audience and has influenced the selection and treatment of many topics taken up by others for further study.” In 2008, Dr. Martin participated in the Center’s panel discussion, “Expanding Philosophical Horizons,” which focused on three 20th-century educators: W.E.B. Du Bois in America, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi in Japan, and Maria Montessori in Italy and the world.
