An Education Fellows seminar brought fellows Julie Nagashima and Mahi Takazawa to the Ikeda Center for a meeting and status updates with Advisory Council members Larry Hickman (chair), Ann Diller, David T. Hansen, Jim Garrison, Virginia Benson, and Nel Noddings.

A seminar called “Exploring a New Humanism” featured Dewey scholars Jim Garrison of Virginia Tech University and Larry Hickman of Southern Illinois University in dialogue with students from several Boston-area universities.

Dialogue Path Press releases its fourth title, America Will Be! Conversations on Hope, Freedom, and Democracy, featuring Daisaku Ikeda and historian Vincent Harding discussing the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the meaning of the Civil Rights Movement for our time.

The Ikeda Center welcomes scholarly friends from across the United States and around the world for a twentieth anniversary celebration. In attendance was Center founder Daisaku Ikeda’s eldest son, Hiromasa Ikeda, who spoke about his father’s commitment to dialogue as the surest path to peace.

The Ikeda Center co-sponsored with George Mason University (GMU) a seminar called “Global Citizenship and Cultural Assumptions About Peace and the Military.” Held at GMU, the event featured GMU students in dialogue with faculty members Peter Stearns, Andrea Bartoli, and William Reeder.

The tenth annual Ikeda Forum for Intercultural Dialogue was called “We the People: Who Are We, and What Is Our Work,” and featured reflections from, and dialogue with, historian and activist Dr. Vincent Harding.

The fifth Dialogue Path Press title is published. Called The Art of True Relations: Conversations on the Poetic Heart of Human Possibility, the dialogue features Sarah Wider and Daisaku Ikeda.

Dialogue Path Press publishes Living As Learning: John Dewey in the 21st Century, by Dewey scholars Jim Garrison and Larry Hickman, and Daisaku Ikeda.

Living As Learning co-authors (with Daisaku Ikeda) Jim Garrison and Larry Hickman appear at Columbia University’s Teachers College, in an event co-sponsored by Teachers College and the Ikeda Center, to discuss themes from the book, especially resonances between humanistic Buddhism and American Pragmatism.

Donna Hicks is author of Dignity: The Essential Role it Plays in Resolving Conflict. In a lecture and discussion she shared findings from her experience using the framework of dignity to help resolve conflicts worldwide.

Meenakshi Chhabra of Lesley University and Darren Kew of UMass Boston were joined by Boston-area university students for a discussion on the complexities of conflict resolution, mediation, and peace building.

The Ikeda Center co-hosts a panel discussion held at the University of San Francisco called “Glimmers of Hope: Peace Education Around the Globe.” The speakers were Monisha Bajaj, Maria Hantzopoulos, Matt Meyer, and Tetsushi Ogata. The Dean of the USF School of Education, Kevin Kumashiro, introduced the event, and Mahi Takazawa moderated.
